About Elastic recordings

Elastic Recordings is the co-creation of Canadian vibraphonist, Michael Davidson and Canadian double bassist, Dan Fortin. It is a collective outlet exploring the spaces where composition and improvisation overlap; the points at which nostalgia meets the present moment.

Elastic aims to curate and disseminate music & sound art that is historically difficult to classify, falling between the spaces of genre. We focus on artistic statements that move beyond the need for stylistic classification and emphasize the process of creation more than the product itself. Each aspect of the sound and visual elements is the product of a process enmeshed with improvisation, where the composed structures still have a quality of spontaneity that breathes new life into art.

When we choose an artist to partner with, we are careful to identify this focus, and the end product is merely a snapshot of this vibrant process.  The visual aspect of the releases seeks to bring visual artists into the dialogue and engage them intimately with the creative process. This includes blurring the lines between improvised and composed structural elements from the sound to the visuals, whether it be album art or videos, that embrace a collective flow from nostalgia to the present moment, looking deeply into the collective memory of humanity and asking questions.

We seek to be inclusive and offer opportunities for artists whose stories have been marginalized, and to create a context for those stories to be the centre of an artistic exploration as we develop. Not to simply highlight the stories, but if invited, to be a part of those stories and engage in deep listening as we learn.
